Why Authenticity Matters Posted on September 22, 2020 by Tanika King I am so excited that you’ve come here to Kings Consulting and Coaching, LLC. Our focus is the development and enhancement of leadership skills in leaders or an organization’s key talent in a way that aligns with their organizational goals, but most importantly is alignment with who they authentically are as a person. Why is authenticity a major component of leadership? I’ll share a brief version of my story. I’m an introvert. All of my greatest ideas, thoughts, and most significant moments of clarity came to me only after moments of deep introspection and spending many hours alone with just my thoughts. As you can imagine, as a leader within my organization, this did not bode well for responding to those looking for an answer to a question in the moment, or providing on the spot guidance when I didn’t have all the facts that I felt that I needed, or coming up with an ingenious idea after a two minute conversation. One of the hurdles that I encountered as an introverted leader was communication. Be louder and more engaging, speak more, speak up, this was some of the advice and feedback I received on how to be a better leader. None of that worked for me because I am not a naturally extroverted person. I admire those qualities in those that are, but it simply isn’t who I am. After much coaching and through a series of my own development sessions, I learned a fundamental truth, leadership is an individual’s ability to influence, motivate, and enable others to contribute toward organizational success. I then learned a second fundamental truth; I could own all those abilities and do them well while still authentically being the introvert that I am. With those two truths in mind, I began my journey of authentic leadership and learned how to communicate and influence in a way that is unique to me but received by others. You too can begin that journey and learn how to influence in a way that is authentically you!
